What type of dog door is the most secure?

I want to fit a Dog Door for my Malamute to have access to the garden and wonder if anyone has any experience of different types and advice about what sort is the beswt to get. I don’t want something that is going to be insecure. Any ideas?

Get a door with a magnetic latch. There is a node you place on the dog’s collar that opens the magnetic latch when the dog gets near it.

Without the magnetic latch, you are basically inviting any critter that walks by the door into your house.

A malamute is quite a big dog so what you have to remember is that if your dog can get in then who else can? I wanted to put a door in mine but as I’ve got a bearded collie, I couldn’t find one that would let me feel my home was safe. Let me know if you find one.

I am so glad that I installed a dog door. My dog doesn’t have to "hold" it and in those instances where I am out for longer than normal, I don’t have to worry. Plus my dog loves the freedom of roaming. In most cases, when you have a dog- they will keep unwanted critters out ! Most animals know to "avoid" doggie backyards. Anyway, get one that has double flaps, this will help keep the entrance air tight when it gets windy or cold out. I installed mine through a wall instead of a door. I avoided the ones that used "keys" that the dog wears on a collar to get in because the keys can become lost or inactivated, I also avoided the "electronic" ones because the more moving parts- the more likely it can break or needed repair.

Hi we have seven dogs ranging from a shepherd cross to 2 puppies (poodle cross pomeranian) and we have found the best door is one made by STAYWELL, the internal dimensions are 1 foot wide and 14.5 inches deep. One of our dogs is a Akita cross and he gets in and out with no problems at all.. The flap is magnetic so shuts itself quite well..Hope this is useful to you, PETS AT HOME sell them as does the Staywell website.. Good luck , Steve
