I want my dog to have insurance and how much would that be?
There are about a dozen pet insurance companies in the US. The purpose of pet insurance is to pay for the unexpected costs if your pet were to get hurt or sick because vet bills can get very expensive. Some companies also offer routine coverage (to pay for exams, vaccines, etc) but I would recommend to skip that, because you’re just paying the same amount of money through more expensive monthly premiums. And in most cases, it costs more than if you were to just plan for those expenses yourself.
Pet insurance typically costs around $25-$80 per month for a dog, depending on it’s age, breed, and where you live.
They all have a co-pay of 10-30% of the bill plus a deductible that is either annual or per-incident or per bill.
I have Trupanion for my dog and they cover 90% of the bill and I chose a $0 deductible so I only ever pay 10% of the bill. They don’t have claim limits or annual limits, and don’t increase your premiums every time your pet has a birthday like lots of companies do. I would definitely recommend them.
In all, do lots of research before choosing a company. Read all the negative reviews on petinsurancereview.com for each company so you know the worst-case scenarios.
Good luck!

There is pet insurance, but it tends to be more of a pain than anything else. If you’re worried about paying for large vet bills you may want to try applying for care credit, but make sure your doctor will accept it first!

I’m not sure how much, but you could ask your vet, they should know. Or ask your insurance company ha ha. I personally think it’s a waste of money as I have noticed that dogs don’t get into as many serious illnesses as humans do. Of course, some do, but I’ve always preferred to pay from my pocket.
And just so you know, pet insurance also is a waste because if your dog gets into a situation where the treatment is too much for you, then your dog will not likely survive treatment. I know I’m sounding awfully bad, but it’s the sad truth. For example, most dogs won’t survive kemotherapy.

Yes there are all kinds of places that offer it, just Google "pet insurance" and sort through the results. The ASPCA is one place that offers it and, yes, I have seen the pet insurance policy mentioned on Progressive commercials as well. The cost is dependent on the type of dog and its age as far as I can tell. And, yes, you should also ask your vet about and make sure to ask if the vet is one that will be bill whatever company you have as the carrier or if you have to pay the entire amount first and then submit for reimbursement from the carrier. I found that to be a difference between carriers as well.
