Has anyone else lost a pet through illness and been ripped off by Pet Plan?

I have recently lost my pet dog through death from illness. In my insurance policy I had cover to refund me his purchase price. I purchased my dog in 2003, and, I can longer provide a receipt. Because of this they have calculated a settlement figure on market value at the date of his death. However, I have my terms and conditions and a letter from the insurance company saying it should be market value at date of purchase. I tried going through there complaints process, but, they are not interested. What should I do? Can anyone help?
Remember, I have a letter from Pet Plan saying it is market value AT DATE OF PURCHASE. Now they are going back on that.
All I want is market value at date of purchase. NOT market value at date of death!

PetPlan dealt with the death of two of my Dobermanns in 2007 very professionally & courteously.

The first was straight forward, he was under 8 years old {a term in the policy} & I had kept all the paperwork {including the receipt from the breeder} in a folder. I submitted a claim for death form & was quickly sent the money.

The second was similar to your situation. I could not find the receipt from the breeder, so contacted the breeder of my b*tch who agreed to write/sign a new receipt, which was forwarded to PetPlan. Once Petplan received the receipt, the claim was settled quickly.

When you register a dog/b*tch with PetPlan the price is set at the point by either a) the price you paid {if you can provide evidence by producing a receipt or b) by the average price of the breed if you cannot provide proof of the amount you originally paid.

Petplan is not attempting to rip you off, the company is simply following the terms and condition of the contractual agreement.

Put simply submit a receipt = full amount paid by the policy holder.
no receipt = average price of the breed at the date of
purchase.

I hope the matter is resolved sooner rather than later for you.

i haven’t had an animal die but we have been ripped of by pet plan! my cat misty was attacked by a dog, punctured her lung etc, she had numerous trips to the vet for the same issues but pet plan were trying to make us pay the excess every time when it was for the injuries from her attack we even got the vet to write to them and explain but they wouldn’t my mum phoned them alot but they didn’t care and didn’t want to help! so we have switched insurers and are now with M and S we haven’t needed to claim from them but apparently they are very good!

is it possible for you to get in touch with the breeder for a replacement receipt or for the breeder to write a letter stating the cost of a replacement puppy?

Usually, if you insure something (sorry to call your dog something, but I am talking as an insurance company would) they ask you to get 2-3 quotes to replace the insured item. I would try to take it further. if you get no joy contact watchdog. Pet Plan charge enough, they should pay up !

    Good luck/

If you cannot provide proof of what you paid for your pet, then what they did is standard procedure. They don’t know what you paid….so they go on market value at the time of death.
The key to always getting what you deserve from any insurance company is proof, proof and more proof.
Sorry you got ripped off, but any insurance company is going to pay out no more than they absolutely have to, so remember to always keep any receipts or other proof of what you paid.
