Hilary Benn and Alan Johnson are today announcing plans to review the Dangerous Dogs Act and this could mean that anyone who keeps a dog, even a docile miniature breed will have to take out an insurance policy in case their pet attacks anyone. Specialist pet insurance firm Petplan have a basic insurance giving £1million worth of cover and third-party liability for £15 per month but their maximum plan giving £3million worth of cover costs between £40 & £50 per month. Could you afford that?
Summer-Rain – the coffers are empty, it’s just more revenue.
What about those people, my daughter included, who deliberately rehome the rejects? She pays insurance for vets bills for these now happy, well adjusted dogs but how many more will she be able to rescue?
Lol! Jess, i’ll be round with a bag of steak for the dogs later – what can i take in exchange? You’re right though one of our friends had a visit from the roadside encampment people last year at around three in the morning. One of them was just removing his caravan from the barn when Stella very quietly stepped up behind him and gave him a gentle massage with her lovely pearly whites. She’s ex Police, a beautiful and very loving Alsatian. As long as he didn’t move, she didn’t break the skin on his ar*e. This one was jailed, caught red bummed!

While I do respect every one of your opinions, please understand I am gun-shy about not insuring my new puppy because of these incidents and I am only asking for reviews on companies. Thank you again!

Here’s a great site with customer reviews for each company. http://www.petinsurancereview.com/
All of the companies you listed got pretty crappy reviews. I went with Petplan and I have been very happy and I have saved far more than I have paid in premiums.
Just remember to look at the fine print…..some companies give great quotes with low premiums but they pay nearly nothing back when you make a claim…..make sure they pay based on what you pay and not on what they use as their own pay scale.
A lot of better companies don’t cover vaccinations, but they cover more when your pet is actually sick so you need to figure out what you want better coverage on.

Looked at eopinions.com. Does anyone know where I can find a place to find a comprehensive list of reviews? Also, if you have experiences to share, that would be great as well. I originally thought of Pets Best but when I looked up information on the people that run it, they supposedly have a history of being involved in a scandal and the founder hunts for fun. It makes me nervous about his compassion towards animals. Sure they are wild animals, but I want to choose a plan that I feel most secure with.

I have a healthy 10 month old cat. I want to take him for routine care (check ups yearly, shots, dental cleaning). And of course some coverage in the event of an unexpected medical condition. He doesn’t seem to be a very high risk pet i.e. no birth defects, but you never know.

I actually just went through this earlier this year. I didn’t use a comparison per say: just focused on what I whated in coverage. When I got my cats a few years back, I went with Banfield (www.banfield.net) located inside most PetsMart stores. Even though they give you the best coverage for your money, their service is so poor (which made it not so cost effective afterall).

When I sent out to find a new vet, I looked for someone who took my CareCredit card. Once I had a vet, I looked at which insurenace he took and I found VPI (http://www.petinsurance.com/).

I think you should first find a vet your kitten is comfortable visiting and then see which insurance companies know your vet.

I would like to take out some insurance for my dog but am struggling to find a company that customers are truly happy with. I have been reading lots of reviews online but there doesn’t seem to be one that everyone agrees is the best? It appears that there is lots of small print and sudden rises in premiums. The whole thing is like a minefield,i don’t know which one to go with.Hopefully you guys will give me some clues. Thanks in advance.
It wasn’t me that gave the first two Answers the thumbs-down…but i am curious why the endings are the same….
ok, so those first two Answers have now been taken away………….

Yes Marks & Spencer’s & John Lewis – greenbee. Both give really good cover which what you really need is policy that pays out on the same condition annually as some pay out a limit and that it. It will not matter that the condition is not gone or chronic

HELP!

Today our vet called us and said he thinks our 7 month old puppy has Addison’s Disease. He is planning to review her file with a few other vets in a couple days, so there is nothing specifically pertaining to Addison’s Disease in her file.

If we get insurance ASAP, would this be considered a pre-existing condition if there were running other tests? (She had Giardia before).

Any information or personal experience about pet insurance would be GREATLY appreciated as we’re looking at about $100/month treatments on a PUPPY.

Thanks!!!
Brandy

When you insure a dog they state that if any condition shows up in the first 14 days the policy can be cancelled, l think this is in case you insure your dog knowing that there is a problem and you haven’t disclosed it.
So if you insure your dog now and say nothing, and then it shows up on any claim form within 14 days, the insurance company can refuse to pay.

Any advice on these, or any others? Thanks.

We have Trupanion pet insurance, the good things about it are that there are no penalties for filing a claim, monthly premiums don’t go up with the pet’s age, and they don’t have breed restrictions. They also cover hip displaysia (not many other companies do) which can be common with Boxer breeds.

I’m wanting to insure my 2 year old dog and puppy, with one dog I assumed my savings would cover any issues but we’re getting a puppy in a couple of weeks so wanting pet insurance for them. I’ve gotten quotes from many companies and read reviews but can’t decide, was wondering if people could share their own experiences. I was thinking of Pet Plan but wondered if their annual payments increase dramatically each year?
Pet Plan quoted me £44 for two dogs – both Shih Tzu.
I am leaning more toward the savings account for both… we had no problems with our previous dogs who lived to be 11 years and 16 years but then I think were we just lucky?

More Than are cheap and seem to offer alot for the monthly premium but I’ve read negative reviews on them.

As I’ve answered already to questions like this, while of course it’s your choice, personally I’ve always felt it far better to maybe open a separate Bank account and put a sum aside monthly rather than contribute to Insurance companies. Depends on whether you have an ‘at risk’ breed(s) too (although in that case, your premiums will be loaded!) but provided you have basically healthy dogs, your vet bills should be minimal. Over the years, this has been the case, generally, with our hounds – and as we kept numbers, insuring them was not viable. We had a good relationship with our vet who knew we’d pay her before putting food on our table, if necessary – and she allowed us to stage pay any unexpectedly big bills we did have.

I took quotes on my puppy Whippet when our numbers were down to just two dogs and even with a breed like a Whippet, which is relatively free of hereditary problems, the quotes I got were horrendous. And the excesses were the nail in the coffin. Most set these (UK) at around £75 which, how amazingly, you’ll find most vet visits come out well under – which means you end up paying the vet in any case, plus the monthly premiums!!

I’d advise you to shop around because they do differ – my brother in law, who checks everything (!!) uses More Than, but I think companies like the big supermarkets, Tesco, Sainsburys, are competitive.

Pet Plan came out way more expensive (for what extra?) than others when I checked by the way.

I want to take out pet insurance for my rottweiler in Northern Ireland (UK) but i keep reading mixed reviews online, so far im considering M&S as Halifax worked out at 100 a month but has fantastic reviews unfortunately. Any recommendations? I don’t mind paying a lot on excess but i want a company that will pay direct not on like I pay first then they refund me type basis. And i most definitely want cover for cancer, but i’m not sure they do cover this treatment? any help please, i’m very confused! i’m reading a million terms and conditions, and its all turned to mush! thanks for your time x

I would imagine they all cover cancer, I can’t think of anyone that would exclude it. The important bit to check with whether you get lifetime cover or cover just for a year after diagnosis.
As for the paying direct, that depends on you setting an agreement with your vet to arrange direct claims. It is most vets policy to get the money from the owner and then the owner get reimbursed by the insurance company, however you could always speak to your vet in advance about the possibility of arranging a direct claim. I haven’t heard of any insurers that don’t do direct claim, but I may be wrong.
Also remember to keep your vaccinations up to date, as it’s a clause in most insurers small print and if you lapse then they won’t pay out for anything (vaccinatable disease or not).
I can’t give you an actual insurer to go for – a) because they’re all so different and it really depends on what you want and b) because I’m legally not allowed to as a vet!
