Ok to take new dog to parks?
Posted by admin in Dog Vacinations on February 22, 2010
I’m getting an 8 1/2 week old puppy on Friday and am supposed to be going to a BBQ picnic on Sunday at a park. He will have only have had one lots of vacinations. Will it be ok to take him to the park for an hour or so? Also, will he be ok if he comes into contact with other dogs there?
I just don’t want him to get sick or anything and don’t know what is ok and what’s not. Thanks!
I would keep contact down to a minimum. Remember this will be a stress at first for your dog, since it is so much for it to take in, so expect strange behavior. Keep the animal away from excreta since this could carry par-vol virus which needs time for vaccination’s to take since this is a deadly virus, ask you vet for further advice, since they would know the strength of the first injection, enjoy the day, you will enjoy the fuss you both will have and as time goes by so will the dog, then you will have a social animal who likes going with you to all of your picnics for the contact and the food, just monitor what other people will give your dog, since it will not know yet when to stop. This is where you will learn what you do now controls how your dog will behave in the future, whether you want it to beg at tables for food, or have it’s own way with your food. This is the hard part when they are loving puppies. you make it’s future and behavior now:
Can my 8 week old puppy meet my friend’s 2 year old dog?

I have a golden retriever puppy who is 8 weeks old. My best friend has a golden retriever who is 2 years old. Her dog is great with puppy’s and is very calm. She has had ALL of her vacinations and is perfectly healthy. Can they meet in a safe envirnment like my house or my friends?
yes you can let them meet inside, just be careful the two year old doesnt hurt your puppy, she would do it by accident because sometimes big dogs try to play with the puppies and they accidentaly hurt them
the whole vet rule about waiting till your puppy is twelve weeks is only for dogs that you dont know extremely well, that could possibly not be healthy
can i take my puppy out after her first vacinations as long as i avoid other dogs?

i know i need to not allow contact with other dogs until she gets her second sets of vacinations and that i should avoid other dogs urine with her etc.
I think you should be fine. I have two dogs they are different in age and my puppy did just fine after his vaccines. Just ask you Vet they will reassure you that you do have to be as worried

it can run in the hundreds not to mention spaying or neutering…try your local pet co, pet smart or human society as many of them have specials on shots and neutering
Dog is limping 3 days after round of vacinations. Went to vet, but still concerned. Would like Vet opinion?

Hello. I am a pediatrician and my dog has developed a limp 3 days after a round of vacinations that included rabies and lepto (among others). 3 days after the shots, he developed a limp in his R front paw and only bears weight when severely distracted (such as cat outside).
We took him to the vet this evening and he has a fever of 104 and we decided to give him carprofen to see if he improves with this and bedrest alone. He also received a pain medication injection and since then, he appears to be in more pain.
The plan from this point is to give him a few days as long as he eats well, then if he doesn’t improve, tap his joint and do xrays?
If there are any vets out there, I was wondering if this is a common complication of vaccines? Also, does this treatment approach seem reasonable.
Thanks.
This is not common at all. The injections are SQ and should not cause any of these problems. Common vaccine reactions would be the same with babies: low grade fever, listlessness, decreased appetite, sometimes soreness at the injection site for 24-48 hours.
The Leptospirosis part of the DHLPPC vaccine can cause more severe reactions in some dogs that are sensitive to it; such as Dachunds. This would include: inflammation at the injection site, swelling of the lips, nose, eyelids. This is usually an anaphylactic reaction and is treated with Benadryl and sometimes steroids.
It is the right location. Most of the time vaccines are always given in the same location on the pet’s body so we can keep track of any vaccine reactions if they happen. For dogs: DHLPPC is in the right shoulder area, Rabies right hip, Bordatella given intranasal, all others (if any) usually given in the left shoulder, left hip area or scruff. Cats: R. shoulder= FVRCP, L. rear=FeLV, R. Rear= Rabies.
Haven’t heard of vaccines causing a limp. I would think maybe if it was given wrong, but the symptoms would also appear that day, not 3 days later.
For a reputable website written by veterinarians about vaccines go to: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=524
You can also search for many other topics there.
Vets will usually check for injuries to the leg by starting at the paw and working their way up. Look carefully in between all the footpads and webbing. Palpate all the way up the leg untill you get a pain response from the dog.
This is a reasonable treatment of NSAIDs and bed rest.
Xrays are usually done next if it doesn’t resolve and joint taps last, since the joint taps hurt quite a bit too.
Info about pain medications for dogs and the benefits of doing bloodwork before you start on long term NSAID therapy:

If it does turn out to be an injury and he needs to be on pain meds. Our vets have had very good pain control with a combination of Dermaxx and Tramadol. They use this combo for their cancer patients and with ACL surgeries.
How much would it cost for A Dog!?!?!?!?

the supplies, vet, vacinations, Dog($300,i ready have price), and for the other 14 years??? whats would be the total cost pretty much,
Lhasa Apso
A well-cared for dog can cost easily $1,000 a year just to maintain, let alone if a catostrophic event occurs, which can cost hundreds to thousands more. A $300 purebred Lhasa Apso is not a well-bred Lhasa Apso, so be prepared for allergy problems, other genetic issue may come up.
A 8lb bag of food may last a toy dog a month, a good quality food cost about $15. 15 x 12 = $180
Treats, biscuts, vitamens, etc. I spend a lot on, but a conservative numer is $10 a month, 10 x 12 = $120
Heartguard, yearly $35
Frontline , yearly about $150
A Lhasa Apso will need groomed about every 2 months, cost conservatively $45 in my area. 45 x 12 = $540
The first year, you will need to visit the vet for shots 3 times. Conservative vet visit with vaccination in my area, $40 40 x 3 = $120
Thereafter at least a visit and vaccination once a year, but you should plan on at least one or two visit due to incidents and illness, just in case.
Toys, bones and rawhides, easily in the past year I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on, but you have a little dog there, so I’ll say conservatively $50. Though he’d be very deprived indeed on such a budget.
Also with a toy breed, the urge to dress it will be irristable. clothes are $10-$30 a garmet in my area.
Leash, collar, brush, nail clippers, crate, and etc. A VERY conservative budget of $50.
Obedience training, $100 a course. At least one course. Very important.
So far we have the extremely tight budget set at : $1,345 the first year, Not including clothes. And great goodness, I’ve spent some much more than that!
How much will my dogs first 2 vacinations cost?
Posted by admin in Dog Vacinations on November 20, 2009
So im getting a little puppy soon, and i was wondering how much the first and second vacination are going to cost?
i live in england so can i have it in pounds please?
I would call the vet you plan on taking your puppy to and ask them. My vet’s office has an insurance plan where I pay a set monthly amount and all of my dog’s preventative vaccines/tests/meds/etc. are covered.
