My breeder said that he does not reccommend Rabies Vacinations after age 18 months.?

He said that once the dog gets the vaccination at 18 months, his body becomes immune to Rabies. He said the vaccination can hurt my dog. The law says I have to get it for my dog. I want to follow the law, but I don’t want my dog to have unnecessary vaccinations. What should I do?
Your dog needs his initial Rabies. Most states go every 2-3 years after the initial vaccine, depending on the incidence of the disease in their area. You may be able to convince your vet to do a vaccine titer (blood test to check immunity) on your dog every time his Rabies is due, and issue you a new tag based on his continued immunity.
I agree that Rabies isn’t necessary for adult dogs — the blood titers support your breeder’s theory. But it’s hard to argue with the law.
ADD: Rabies is *not* an annual vaccine. All Rabies vaccines produced are certified for 3 years of coverage…it’s up to the individual state to determine how often they want dogs vaccinated (again, depending on how prevalent the disease is in the state), and most are going with every 3 years. Some still require the vaccine every 2 years.
Can I have my cat around my dog if he doesn’t have all vacinations?

I got my basset hound puppy yesterday, and he is 9 weeks and 2 days old. I need to take him in for his shots ASAP but I dont have the paper with me for the vaccination list so it probably won’t be until tomorrow or later depending on the availibility of the place. He has all of his vaccinations up to date- my cat (who lives with a relative) is coming to stay for a few weeks. Is this dangerous?
It may be dangerous they will kill each other everyone knows dog’s and cat’s never get along. Try put the cat and the dog togheter if they growl and try to attack you better seperate them.
Boarder Collie Puppy. Can you explain the way first vacinations work please and anything else i should do??

My nieces Boarder Collie is expecting pups in February and we are hoping to have one of the puppies (dog preferably). I grew up with a Boarder Collie myself so am fairly confident about the training and time and energy required but don’t know anything about the initial vacination and worming programme that a puppy should have and how long this will take or how much this will cost. Please help. (Based in Bristol, England)
Thanks.
They get 4 sets of distemper/parvo (DH2PP) every 3 to 4 weeks….some vets only give 3 and then the rabies vaccination with the last distemper. You can have the bordetella vaccine done for kennel cough, but I only suggest that if you’re planning on boarding. The vaccine only covers some strands of the disease, so if some other strand gets in contact with your dog, he’ll still get it. My vet only suggests it when you’re boarding the dog at a kennel.
Can a dog be de-wormed more than once in a year? What about other vacinations?
Posted by admin in Dog Vacinations on June 7, 2010
Can a dog be vaccinated more than once with the same vaccination?
Can they be de-wormed more then once?
And is there a certain age where a dog can’t be spayed/neutered anymore?
Thanks
1) Vaccines needed to be kept updated. So, I believe the answer’s yes – a dog can be vaccinated more than once with the same vaccine. There are some vaccines that needed to be given once a year, something like that.
2) If I remember correctly, my vet said that a dog could be de-wormed every few monthes. If your dog goes to public dog parks often, or some other areas that a dog can be easily exposed to worms, he/she would need de-wormers more frequently. Ask your vet about how often you should give your dog de-wormers. Maybe just drop by the vet’s office and talk to the assistants, they are very knowledgeable as well.
3) I did some search for you, and I did not see any answers regarding to "how old is too old for spaying/neutering a dog"
However, generally, a dog can be neutered/spayed at at least 5 monthes old. I guess dogs can be neutered and spayed anytime after that. But it is recommanded to get them neutered/spayed at 5-6 monthes to reduce the chances of any medical or behavioral problems.
Hope these help.
My dog is refusing his food and vomiting on days?
Posted by admin in Dog Vacinations on May 18, 2010
i have a 6month old irish setter and recently he’s refusing his food or just touching it, he is still active, has had his vacinations, he is vomiting now and then sometimes trying to vomit but failing to do so, he’s been on and off like this for the past week, at first i thaught that he had an upset stomach but now i dont know what to think. he seems fine every other time but just wont eat his food, it aint anything to do with the brand of food as he gets fed fresh beef and rabbit, he had a bad night last week where i was up most of the night with him because he was being sick a lot all night but was ok in the morning. i was wondering if that night could have had some affect on him as he is a sensitive breed of dog. Any suggestions please?
Why are you even asking this question? Your dog will not eat and is throwing up. Take him to the vet. Hopefully your waiting has not made it any worse. I cannot believe you could not figure this one out on your own. Its like smelling a gas leak and calling the landlord to ask what to do… answer is obvious and not taking it is dangerous.
I want to take my dog from Canada to the uk?

what is the minimum wait for a dog to travel after all its vacinations and being chipped
When you get the vaccines from the vet they will tell you..or you can call ahead and ask them.
My only advice is to ask the vet what vaccines need to be done. While doing my vet assistant field placement (co-op) a person came in to get vaccines for a dog tehy were taking to europe and there was some special procedure and paper work that was needed.
Why is blood comin from the penis of my male dog?
Posted by admin in Dog Vacinations on April 18, 2010
I am really worried about him as he is my best friend, the opening is like a circle at the top then a small slit going down from that. He sat down on the carpet and then got up i noticed blood i checked him and he was bleeding underneath, it was quite bloody and messy yet i could not find a cut. He has had no other medical problems and i am really worried. He is only a puppy and is just 1year 1 1/2 months old. I am going to check his urine tommorow, what would it mean if its coming from there, and if it isn’t how should i treat it. His yearly vacinations are coming soon, I’m going to ask the vet about it. Please tell me whats wrong with him. If it helps he is a boston terrier who is not neuterd.
My sister had a dog with similar symptoms. Question–did he get out of the house and run away, and come back a few hours later? With my sister’s dog (not joking here, even though it is kinda funny), the dog got out and had so much sex he injured his penis. She was really worried and took him to the vet. I don’t remember how it was treated, so you might need to call the vet to find out.
What is the chance my dog got lime disease?
Posted by admin in Dog Vacinations on April 5, 2010
my 7 month old puppy got the first of her 2 lime disease vacinations about 5 weeks ago and then her second yesterday today i found a tick on her that was pretty big? what should i look for or should i take her for a blood test?
If she did get lyme disease a red ring type rash would appear around where the tick bit her…but that could be hard to see depending on her coat. Two vacinations should be good, and lyme disease does not always occur 100% of the time. If you see any kind of rash, or she chews in that spot or acts different then take her to the vet, otherwise she should be good.
How much does all of this dog vacination cost at Petsmart?
Posted by admin in Dog Vacinations on March 22, 2010
I just got a puppy with NONE of her shots. If I took her to the vet and got all of the necessary vacinations/shots, how much would it cost for each individual shot? I’m thinking of taking her to the vet inside of Petsmart, called Banfield. It’s in Richmond, California.
I know that I absolutely need the Rabies shot and the DHLPP, but are there any others that should know of?
Don’t know about California. But, as a pup, she should be checked out by a reputable vet. The initial shots are usually a SERIES given over a few weeks. The check up (In VA) costs about $100 or so. Petsmart is probably fine and will most likely cost less. Get a Bordatella shot as well – its an airborn virus she can pick up at any dog park.
When she is older, check out 1-800-Pet-Meds.com. I have 4 dogs and in VA, I can administer the DHLPP myself. I saved $220 in Vet fees and paid $22.00 total for the vaccines from pet meds. The only shot in VA required to be administered by a Vet (and they have to report it to the State) is the rabies vaccine. I am not sure if you can get bordatella vaccine from pet mets without a vet signing off. I need to check this out myself.
I just took my 4 dogs to the local shelter last month and paid $40 total to vaccinate all of them against Rabies for the next 3 years. This saved me the vet fees which include the office visit and all the other fees. Yippie!
Good luck and enjoy that pup!
Ok to take new dog to parks?
Posted by admin in Dog Vacinations on February 22, 2010
I’m getting an 8 1/2 week old puppy on Friday and am supposed to be going to a BBQ picnic on Sunday at a park. He will have only have had one lots of vacinations. Will it be ok to take him to the park for an hour or so? Also, will he be ok if he comes into contact with other dogs there?
I just don’t want him to get sick or anything and don’t know what is ok and what’s not. Thanks!
I would keep contact down to a minimum. Remember this will be a stress at first for your dog, since it is so much for it to take in, so expect strange behavior. Keep the animal away from excreta since this could carry par-vol virus which needs time for vaccination’s to take since this is a deadly virus, ask you vet for further advice, since they would know the strength of the first injection, enjoy the day, you will enjoy the fuss you both will have and as time goes by so will the dog, then you will have a social animal who likes going with you to all of your picnics for the contact and the food, just monitor what other people will give your dog, since it will not know yet when to stop. This is where you will learn what you do now controls how your dog will behave in the future, whether you want it to beg at tables for food, or have it’s own way with your food. This is the hard part when they are loving puppies. you make it’s future and behavior now:
