In a perfect world, you will be able to keep your dog inside. But sometimes that just isn’t possible. Perhaps your dog has outgrown your house, or you have a new baby or an elderly relative moving in that you are worried about your dog being around. In either case, the solution is not to simply cast your dog out into the backyard without any shelter. If your dog has to be outside most of the time, it is important to provide a dog house so your dog can continue to live safely and comfortably. Indeed, even if your dog is allowed in the house, a dog house can still be a good idea if your dog will be spending extended periods outside during the day. In such cases, a dog house will provide shade on sunny days, and warmth on cold days.

The most obvious factor to consider when choosing a dog house is the size of your dog. It should be spacious enough for your dog to stretch or to turn around. Don’t buy one that is too large for your pet. Your dog will not be comfortable in a large empty space. Think about the places in your house where your dog likes to sleep and try to match that size; these places will usually be nestled into corners, or on landings, or curled up in a dog bed. Try to find the size that will make your dog as comfortable as possible.

The next important consideration is climate. If you live in a very hot place, get a dog house that is well ventilated. Some manufactures offer raised dog houses to allow for an even greater air flow around and through the dog house. Alternatively, if the heat is really bad, you can even purchase dog houses with air conditioning. If you choose to go this route, be sure that it has a door with a good seal to help keep the electricity bills down. If you are more concerned about snow than heat waves, choose a dog house that is waterproof and well insulated. As a bonus for your pet, you can purchase a heated pet bed.
//-->

If you only need a dog house on a temporary basis, you should consider purchasing a portable dog house. Resembling a small tent, they are collapsible and, as the name indicates, light and easy to transport. While not designed to withstand a winter storm, they are usually made of very breathable materials and can provided a convenient and comfortable home away from home when travelling with your dog. If you plan to use a portable dog house while on the road, however, you should get your dog used to using it at home first before trying it in a new place where your dog may feel ill at ease.

As a final consideration, if you are particularly handy with tools, consider building the dog house yourself. A number of basic plans are available on the internet for you to choose from. Keep in mind, however, that depending how competent you are with woodwork, this may turn out to be a more expensive option. Additionally, ensure that the dog house you’ve made is stable and will withstand the elements before putting your dog in it for the night.

Have a fenced in dog run made of chain link coming right from the Dog Door… complete with a ‘ceiling’. That way if the cats get out, they cant ‘get out’.

I would also think to put the doggie door in a wall versus in a door, as people would not be able to walk out into the yard with the run in the way.

Canine parties are now a fact of life for many dog and their owners. If you are invited to a party for a pooch which dog accessories will you need? Maybe you are the one planning the event, you will still need accessories.

If will depend on the event of course. If you are going to be a guest at a summer shindig you may want matching beachwear for you and your little furry friend or at least hats and beach towels.

A dog attending any social function should have an appropriate collar and leash. If the event is formal such as a wedding or cocktail party you may prefer something with rhinestones. A tiara might be a nice touch and don’t hold back on the gown or tails (and I don’t mean the canine variety). There are outfits made from satin, lace and other lovely fabrics. These pieces of clothing may also have matching jackets, cloaks or capes.

Holidays are the perfect time for a soiree. Besides fabulous costumes for Halloween and party clothing for Christmas you will find dog accessories made to compliment and adorn. There are charming hats, boots and sweaters. Your dog will look like a million bucks.

Now that you have an idea of what Bowser will be wearing maybe you should concentrate on gift ideas. There are all kinds of dog accessories that will be perfect for any party or occasion.

Shop online and you will find an amazing array of accessories and gifts for any dog. Personalized presents are always nice and you may have a choice of doggy dishes, beds, pillows, chairs, Christmas ornaments and more. Online shopping allows you to see so many dog accessories and they can be conveniently purchased and delivered right to your door.

Toys are hot dog accessories and the choices are almost endless. Choose from balls, plush toys, snacks launchers and toys that can be chased. You will want to make sure all the toys are safe for dogs and won’t cause any problems. There are toys that can be stuffed with snacks and you could also include a nice assortment of treats. Any toy that can be chewed safely makes a good gift, also. Pull toys are always popular and can be enjoyed by the owner as well.

Other dog accessories could include grooming items. There are wonderful combs and brushes, and shampoos and conditioners that are gentle and safe to use.

Maybe the guest of honor loves to walk and gets to take part in this activity on a daily basis. A new collar and leash combo would make a terrific gift. You could include one of those little bones filled with plastic bags for doggy doo pick up while you’re at it.

Whether you are the invited or the invitee for the next canine celebration you will be prepared when you explore all the dog accessories available.

Everyone needs a space of their own. You have your home office or den, your husband has the garage or workshop, your children have their bedrooms. But what about the dog? Even the family dog needs a space of his own from time to time. This is the true function of the dog crate. Many dog owners refuse to use them because of the negative connotations that come with it. But, if used properly, a dog crate or a small dog cage, can serve as a place of solitude for your dog.

In order for the crate to be a positive experience for your dog, begin the process of crate training on a day or night when you have time to stay at home and observe your dog’s behavior. During the day, for instance, put your dog inside the crate for short periods say, 15-minute intervals. A successful crating session has happened if your dog seems comfortable. If your dog whines or tries to get your attention, ignore her, but take note. If it’s simply a cry for attention, she will soon learn that crate time is personal time, and will begin to occupy herself or rest. If the whining worsens, or does not go away over a few days of consistent crating sessions, there may be a deeper issue there, and you should consult an expert.

To reinforce the idea that the crate should be a positive experience, crate your dog several times during the day and increase each session by five minutes. After each session resume your dog’s normal routine, taking play breaks and walks outside. By the end of the day, you should be up to a full 30 minutes of crate time.

That evening, put her to bed in the crate after she’s had her nightly bathroom break, of course. Chances are, she will fall right to sleep.

If she spends her 15-minute interval whining, simply continue crating her throughout the day in 15-minute intervals until she begins to feel comfortable enough to stop trying to get your attention. By bedtime, she should be comfortable enough to spend a night in the crate. If she whimpers at this point, don’t worry – especially if she is very young. A young puppy will still be suffering from separation anxiety and missing her mother. Successful crate training will provide comfort and stability during this difficult transition period.

The crate can also be an invaluable tool when it comes to housebreaking your dog. It is a rare dog that will go to the bathroom when confined to a small space. Like humans, they find the idea of soiling themselves pretty disgusting and will avoid doing so if at all possible. For that reason, if you are crate-training and potty-training at the same time, take your dog outside to use the bathroom after each crate session. Give her five or 10 minutes to do her business and praise her lavishly when she does.

If you are using the crate specifically to potty train, you may want to recrate her after a nonproductive bathroom break. Once she goes in the yard, however, praise her lavishly and release her to play.

Many people who use crates for their dogs leave the crate door open when the dog is not inside, in order to give the pooch access to it. Remember, the crate is a good thing. It is your dog’s room. The fact that your dog chooses to spend time there on her own is a good sign. This will become a place of security and will provide peace of mind for both you and your dog.

Im trying to install an electric Dog Door. Im not sure how to get the wire through the door jamb without having it eventually wear/break from the constant open/close. Anyone have an idea on how you can protect the wire between the door / door jam? thanks for any help
Thanks for the answer. Im still a little confused on what the product would be called? or if you have a link to one that would be even better! thanks for the help

From the DOOR STRIKE, wire it back to a copper servo connector. This will transfer all signals, electronic and otherwise, through that circular/servo connection at the door. This type of servo/connection always has two separate plates of copper connected by pressure between the door and frame. In other words, hard wire to the servo on the molding/wall side of the door. Connect the transfer side to the opposite side of the circular/servo and then to the strike. You are done.

Radio Shack sells this piece of equipment.

You’re happy at home, but there just seems to be something missing. Ah, it’s a dog. Remember when you were a child, the fun you had with your dog. While you can’t recapture your youth, you can fill the void. And of you have children then they can get to enjoy the love and attention of their very own dog. It will also teach them some responsibility. Hey, every kid will commit to taking the dog for walks before you get one, but when the chips are down?

So the first question you ask yourself is do you buy or to adopt. Both have their pros and cons. Most people head out to the breeders and pick up a purebred dog and can sometimes pay large sums of money. That’s fine if you’re going to shows and competitions, but some of the nicest and best tempered dogs can be found at the pound, or in foster care. It’s a much cheaper route and it gives a dog a home.

But beware! You need to decide what type of dog, its age and size before you head out the door and then stick to it! Once you are at the pound meeting the dogs you’ll see so many cute dogs that your heart can run away with you. So make a decision and stick to it, no matter how much pressure your children place on you!.

Talk to your local rescue groups and go see the fostered dogs. This is a great way to find a dog that suits your needs because you can ask the foster family about the dog before you commit.

Consider an older dog. Once a dog reaches 3 or 4, its temperament and behavior is pretty well set, it’s probably been spayed or neutered and it will be full grown. You will know exactly what you are getting and provide a loving home for a long time to come.

Once you get your dog home there will be a period of adjustment. Depending on the dogs circumstances it may have been in a foster home, it may have been abused and it’s spent some time in the cages at the pound. This is a difficult time for your dog so extra understanding is needed. Your dog may bark, chew, scratch and even have some ‘accidents’ while trying to adjust to a new life. It’s stressful for the dog so make a safe haven for your new family member and give him some space and time to adjust.

Exercise is important so take your dog out and give it all the exercise it needs as soon as you can. This will give you a good indication of how much exercise your dog requires and how well behaved it is.

Training is important, no matter what the history of the dog is. This will give you valuable insights into your dogs behavior, (as well as your own!), and it’s great bonding time too. Make sure that you’re consistent so that your dog learns how to behave correctly. Follow this simple advice and you’ll have a happy, healthy, loving, well behaved dog for you and your family to enjoy for a long time to come!

Having a Dog comes with many responsibilities. The key explanation for restrictions imposed on dogs by many countries and states in America is because of irresponsibility of dog owners.

People get dogs for all the wrong reasons which they regretted at the end. Owning a Dog should never become troublesome, which is why it is essential that if you want to own a dog, do it for the correct reason before getting one.

You should not get a dog for:

1. Protection

The wrong understanding for people who have this rationale in owning a dog, is that the dog will automatically be protective for their family which absolutely will not come true. Wrong way of training like keeping the dog away and not socializing them properly with people for trying to make them to be protective could turn the dog to be fearful and wary of strangers. Instead of protecting the dog owner, when face with certain critical situation, this dog would probably run for life.

Worse still some owners, train the dog to be aggressive and bark by tying him in a certain location and training him to have the territorial aggressiveness. This is wanting for lawsuits to come knocking on your door. Thousands of children and people had been hurt all over the world just because some children often found wondering within the territorial supposed to be protected by your dog.

If your intention for getting a dog, is for protection, then a better way is to get those electronic alarm devices that can sound like vicious barking which can be turn on by motion detectors. This would probably much more useful than getting a dog.

2. Children companion

A lot of children often beg their parents for a dog, just for a reason of cuteness or fun to play with. Usually this comes with a promise of taking good care of the dog well being and cleaning up the messes they will create. Well this is definitely a very bad choice to be made. Because the effect of cuteness and fun to play with will be gone after days or weeks, and now the dog will be left with no care.

Typically this job is deliberately shift to the busy mom who does not have the enough time to train the dog and such the dog would acquire bad habits which can not be tolerated by the busy home makers. This is probably why there are so many dogs end up in the shelter and some on the streets. If you are not prepared to train the dog to be a good part of the family, then give stuffed toys to your children instead of getting them a dog.

3. Competing with your neighbor. : )

Out of all the silly things people do, possibly this is one of the worse one. Just because early in the morning one day, your neighbor brought his dog for a jog and shows you how good it is to have a dog and how beautiful his dog is, you get jealous and get one for yourself so that you can show it to your neighbor too.

Although you probably not be the one who do this, there are people out there who did these stupid things. Having a dog is a lifetime devotion and it takes effort to be able to enjoy and have a meaningful relationship with your dog. So pride and competition should not be a factor in getting a dog.

Actually, if you look at it, there is not much different in having the correct reason of wanting a child and wanting a dog. You should purpose to do all you can to make him a contributing member of the community. You should be dedicated to correctly socializing him, teaching him how to behave in any kind of circumstances, loving, providing and caring for your dog.

Responsibility in having a dog starts before getting one, you should start studying on how to best care and provide your dog. Get obedience training manual and learn from those so that you know what to do when you bring the dog home.
